The University Grants Commission (UGC) has come under criticism amid allegations that it is promoting the ruling BJP government. The controversy arose after UGC directed colleges to set up selfie points on campuses featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the background. The move triggered strong backlash, with critics describing it as an indirect campaign for Modi ahead of the 2024 general elections.
Following the criticism, UGC withdrew the proposed selfie point designs. However, the commission has not clarified the reasons behind the withdrawal of visuals featuring the Prime Minister.
Adding to the debate, a former UGC secretary told The Telegraph that the commission is gradually turning into an extension of the ruling party. He also pointed out that in a previous directive, UGC had urged educational institutions in Maharashtra to celebrate the 100th birth anniversary of a leader associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
These developments have raised fresh questions about UGC’s neutrality and autonomy, with concerns growing over alleged political influence in academic institutions.
